It was a big night at the April Board of Education meeting for Boonville R-I.
The first order of business was certification of the April election results. Out-going board members Pat Zeitlow and Jason Polk were recognized and thanked for their service on the school board. Then the board was adjourned for the swearing-in of new board members Mrs. Lisa Leathers and Mr. Samuel Giroux.
The new board was called to order by Superintendent Dr. Mark Ficken who asked for nominations for president. Charlie Melkersman was nominated and voted in by acclamation.
As President, Melkersman took over the meeting and asked for nominations, in turn, for vice-president and treasurer. Dr. Richelle Kluck and Dr. James Gann were nominated, respectively, and both voted in by acclamation.
The Board recognized BHS student Tyler Schuster for scoring a perfect score on the ACT test.
According to the Missouri School Board Association, the number of sexual predators on staff in our schools is on the rise. Guidelines are in place to protect our children, and to remove and prosecute these predators. A law has recently been passed to help students with mental health problems who are also on Medicaid. Medicaid will now pay for services in and for schools.
The Board voted to approve the bids offered for surplus items except for the ice machine. It was moved and approved to give the ice machine to the Boonville Fire Department for all the help they give to the schools.
Health insurance rates have gone up considerably and the board voted to shop around for better prices.
One seat remains open on the school board and the position is being advertised.
Base salaries for certified and non-certified staff members will increase by two percent beginning school year 2019-2020.
Dr. Ficken reported that the lockers at LSE and the HS are in bad shape and no longer able to be repaired. He also reported that the science lab at the HS is in need of maintenance.
The Board adjourned and went into closed session.
