The Building Bridges Diversity Task Force met at the CCBC Community Center Saturday morning, April 14, at 10:00 for brunch. Over two dozen task force members and other concerned citizens took time out of their busy schedules to attend. Following brunch and a bit of socializing, Dr. Sarah Marriott, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services and Director of Special Education for the Boonville School District, opened the presentation with a brief history of the newly formed task force.
A committee had been formed back in October to begin laying the groundwork for this task force. This was the first meeting open to the public to begin the monumental task of Building Bridges. They plan to do this with community outreach and by educating the community.
Their mission statement is:
1.Raise awareness of educational gaps and student needs
2.Create an open dialogue
3.Engage community to find solutions
4.Take ownership of educating ALL students
5.Bridge achievement gap among all groups
6.Develop community strategies and prepare youth to be productive citizens.
By way of introduction, each person was asked to give their name, where they worked, and why they had chosen to attend the meeting. Then the brain storming began. Each table was asked to name problems facing our school children today and how many children this problem affected. The actual answers were shocking. Each table brainstormed possible solutions to the problem and shared it with the others.
The next meeting will be Tuesday May 8, at 6 p.m. at the school’s central office o Main Street.
