The Boonville R-1 Board of Education approved several developments surrounding Boonville High School in their monthly meeting at the district's central office on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
In a continuation of unfinished business from the January meeting, the board, by a 7-0 measure, approved the bid by ATG Sports to replace the athletic turf at Gene Regan Field for an estimated total cost of $287,197. ATG Sports produced and laid the current turf on the field and are scheduled to begin installing the new material in June 2018. The “RamTurf” product being installed features improved durability, a new second coating formula, new extrusion method and highest-possible face weight of 52 ounces.
The bid by Septagon Construction to build a new greenhouse at the Boonslick Technical Education Center or BTEC was also proposed and approved unanimously. The cost of the proposed 2,500 square-foot greenhouse is approximately $300,000. Issues impacting the current BTEC greenhouse, which is nearly 20-years-old, include the aging of original heating and air conditioning units in addition to materials lost due to storage areas subjected to harsh, seasonal weather.
Use of an enhancement grant from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education or DESE would alleviate $75,000 of the cost of the new greenhouse leaving $225,000 to be paid by the school district. Construction is set to begin in July 2018 for the project to be completed by September of 2018.
The also board approved a revised version of the district's 2018-2019 school calendar by a 6-1 vote. The revised schedule includes four professional development days for teachers, a shift in winter break days and a new date for the 2018 Homecoming celebration.
Countering concerns regarding less student instruction time in exchange for increased professional development for district staff is the switch from a day-based to hour-based calendar, which will exceed the DESE requirement of 1,044 instructional hours. The change provides and extra 34.89 hours of instructional time, countering previously unscheduled late starts, early dismissals and weather-related cancellations.
New business for the evening concentrated on the board’s discussion to approve the issue of $1,040,000 in Lease Certificates of Participation and the 2018-2019 Debt Service Budget featuring items including the certificates. The measure requires a public hearing during the next Board of Education meeting on March 21, 2018 before being subject for approval. The Lease Certificates of Participation would assist in financing projects like the athletic turf replacement and new BTEC greenhouse.
Additionally, the board presented an update on the city initiative known as Project Pele, pertaining to the development of seven soccer fields surrounding the BHS campus. According to the board report, the project is moving forward on-schedule, as weather permits, to have at least one field available by Summer 2018. The lights for the complex are being installed while the City of Boonville is seeking bids for fencing to border the fields.
The board also recognized the attendance incoming board members Lisa Leathers and Sam Giroux who will be installed in April 2018.
