The Pilot Grove boys middle school basketball team won its home opener Tuesday night by beating the Jamestown Eagles 25-18. The Tigers, 1-1 on the season, trailed Jamestown 10-8 at the half and 18-17 after three before rallying back with an 8-0 advantage in the final period for the win.

The New Franklin Lady Bulldogs softball team clinched the Central Activities Conference title Wednesday night by beating the Madison Panthers 12-2 in six innings. The Lady Bulldogs, improving to 16-6 overall and 7-0 in the CAC, scored at least one run in every inning against Madison and led 2-1 after one, 6-1 after two, 7-1 after three and 8-1 after four.

Lack of rainfall in recent weeks has left the Mississippi River approaching record low levels in some areas from Missouri south through Louisiana.
