The Boonville Pirates baseball team finished 1-1 in bonus games on Saturday at Twillman Field in Harley Park with a 7-0 win against Mexico in Game 1 and a 8-5 loss to Eugene in the second game. While the Pirates may have played one of its best games of the season against Mexico, head coach Fred Smith said in the second game against Eugene the players reverted back to taking bad approaches at the plate.
The Boonville Pirates C Baseball Team picked up a sweep against the Smith-Cotton Tigers on Wednesday at the Boonville High School Ball Field 2-0 and 9-0. While improving to 4-1 on the season, C-team coach Tyler Schanzmeyer said he was very proud of the defensive effort by the players.
The Pilot Grove baseball team tried to make the best of the situation Saturday in the Sacred Heart Tournament in Sedalia. After beating Smith-Cotton’s JV on Thursday, the Tigers forfeited Friday’s game against Cole Camp due to the weather.
New Franklin baseball coach Erich Gerding described Saturday’s bonus games as a tough day after finishing 1-1 with a 20-5 loss to Salisbury and a 12-6 win over BPH (Bunceton/ Prairie Home). Although the loss against Salisbury-a district opponent-was the tougher of the two, Gerding said the Bulldogs had too many non-competitive pitches and pitching behind the count.
The Boonville Lady Pirates soccer team finished 1-1 in the Lady Bulldog Classic over the weekend in Stover. While winning the first game 3-1 in penalty kicks against Stover, Boonville soccer coach Alec Adair said the girls played decent all around.
The Boonville boys’ and girls’ track teams expected the unexpected while competing against a field of sixth other teams Thursday at Centralia. In what has traditionally been a strong meet for both the boys and girls, Boonville coach Melissa Baker said this meet was no different.
The Boonville Pirates Tennis Team had its most impressive win to date by recording wins in five out of the six singles matches and all three doubles matches to beat the Marshall Owls 8-1 Wednesday night at the high school tennis courts.
Espey cards meet medalist honors for the third match in a row The Boonville Pirates golf team had its best outing of the season Wednesday night in a dual against the Mexico Bulldogs at Hail Ridge Golf Course in Boonville. While beating the Bulldogs by 12 strokes, 160172, the Pirate golfers also had the meet medalist as sophomore Zack Espey captured his third straight honor with a career low 2-under par 33.
New Franklin’s Kelsi Fair and Drake Clark garnered two second place finishes, and the boy’s and girl’s track teams both finished 10th overall Thursday during the annual Fayette Relays on the campus of Central Methodist University in Fayette.
Eleven athletes from the area were recently selected to the KMZU Dream Team for the 2023 season. In Classes 4-6, Zoe Davis, Jackson Johns and Evan Bishop were named to the team from Boonville.
