Beyond Reason

The phrase “back to school” means different things to different people. To some, Back To School is a 1986 comedy starring Rodney Dangerfield where he goes well, back to school.

THE LOWE DOWN:

Aesop has a fable that tells the story of two frogs that lived in the same pool of water. During the hot summer, the pool dried up. The frogs who need water to thrive, set out to find another place to live. They passed a deep well full of water. One frog said to the other that they should make this well their new home. The other frog erring on the side of caution, questioned his friend about what they would do if the deep water failed them, and they couldn’t get out of the cavernous well. The moral: Do nothing without a regard to the consequences or as my parents taught me as a child, “Think before you act.”

The goal of learning . . .

It’s the time of year in Arkansas public schools when ACT Aspire test results are released. These tests no more prove that a child or teacher is doing their job and learning is taking place, than quarterly grades determine a child’s success in life. Grading can be subjective, and some children are not adept at test taking.

THE LOWE DOWN: Flair for leadership . . .

The other day I read a quote that made me stop and take pause. It read, “Don’t ever work for someone you don’t want to become.” Now at first glance, it makes perfect sense. Some might read that and say to themselves, “Well, of course. That’s a no-brainer. I would never do that.” At closer inspection though, how many people do we all know who work for bosses or companies who exhibit qualities that are unbecoming or downright negative?
