Happening each year on the fourth weekend in August, the Missouri River Festival of the Arts is the oldest performing arts festival in the state of Missouri and is held in the oldest theater in continuous use west of the Allegheny Mountains, Thespian Hall. Sponsored by the Friends of Historic Boonville and under the artistic direction of David Halen, Concertmaster of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra as well as the Aspen Music Festival, the MRFA is three nights of classical music featuring world-class musicians with performers from both the Kansas City and St. Louis Symphonies joining together on one stage.

The annual Heritage Days parade drew a large crowd to downtown on Saturday morning, June 25. With over 60 entries, there were all the elements you look for in a parade. There were class floats, business floats, an antique tractor parade complete with steam engine, fire trucks, the Shriners brought clowns, and of course, the most important element of all, candy for all the children to collect. The Boonville Silver Pirate marching band had both high school and middle school students participating. Turning Pointe Dance Studio wowed the crowd with a short routine they learned for the parade. Candidates running in the August Primary were among the participants, handing out candy and fliers to all who lined the street.
For some, one of the best parts of Independence Day is fireworks. There are two non-profit organizations in the area that can supply all the firepower one needs to have a bang-up celebration.
With the August Primary fast approaching, campaigning for public office is in full swing. Candidates are out meeting people and trying to get their name and message across to the voting public. As in the past, the Boonville Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a Meet the Candidate night. The Chamber hosts a special candidate night for each contested race for our Boonville City Council seats or for our county positions within Cooper County, and if necessary, try to schedule participation from candidates running for state positions. This year, Meet the Candidates will be on Thursday, July 14. The forum will be held at United Church of Christ’s Activities Building, 700 E Spring Street, Boonville and begin at 7 p.m. Meet the Candidates provides a public forum where the local media and public can ask questions through a moderator to the participating candidates in contested races.
