The Pilot Grove boys’ basketball team battled for 40 minutes Friday night in the consolation game against Carrollton in the Wildcat Classic in Slater. After trailing by five at the break and four after three quarters of play, the Tigers rallied back in the final period to tie the game at 36-all.

New Franklin girls drop third place game in Sturgeon Tournament

The New Franklin girls’ basketball team can look at several reasons for Saturday’s 52-41 loss against South Callaway in the third-place game in the Sturgeon Tournament. Along with a slow start in the game, the Lady Bulldogs also struggled from the foul line by hitting only 9 of 22 shots for 41 percent.

Melba Marie Eichen

Melba Marie Eichen, of Carlinville, passed away January 22, 2022, at Heritage Health of Carlinville, a result of COVID-19. She was born September 3, 1924, the eldest of six, to Harry and Loretta Schaefer Klaus. Due to a difficult labor, she had the unusual-for-the-era privilege of being born in St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL instead of in their farmhouse near Nilwood.

Larry “Henry” Schupp, 81, of Pilot Grove, passed away Friday, January 28, 2022, at Katy Manor, surrounded by his family. Born November 4, 1940, at the family home in Pilot Grove, he was one of six children of Harlan and Alice (Lammers) Schupp.
