School board discusses school safety and bullying

School safety and bullying were of the most discussed topics at the Board of Education’s October meeting on October 19. Assistant Superintendent Fred Smith presented to the board about a school safety assessment and review. The district is constantly looking to enhance safety procedure and protocols in place. One possibility is the Standard Response Protocol, created by the “I Love You Guys” Foundation. The “I Love U Guys” Foundation was started in 2006 by Ellen and John-Michael Keyes following a school shooting that took the life of their daughter, Emily. On that day Emily sent two text messages... One to her mother, Ellen, “I love u guys. K” and to her father, John-Michael, “I love you guys.:” The foundation has put together a best practices kit. This program would help the school make adjustments to processes and procedures already in place by standardizing terminology across the district. Other avenues are also being explored to determine the best fit for the district.
