The American people have French historian and abolitionist Edouard de Laboulaye to thank for the statue "Liberty Enlightening the World", otherwise known as the "Statue of Liberty."Laboulaye's idea for the statue originated in 1865, to be a gift to the US to commemorate their upcoming centennial of independence in 1876, the perseverance of American democracy, and the liberation of the nation's slaves.
