New Franklin pitcher Zach Evans gave up only hits and two walks through seven innings of play to lead the Bulldogs past Cairo in CAC action Tuesday night in New Franklin by a score of 7-0.
The Bulldogs, 4-0 on the season, opened the game with one run in the bottom-half of the first and then sent one run across in the third and five in the fifth to garner the victory.
New Franklin coach Erich Gerding said the teams approach was much better against Cairo. “We had many more quality at-bats that were productive,” Gerding said. “Zach threw a 68-pitch complete game, which was phenomenal. Our infield defense had a lot to do with that.”
While picking up the complete-game victory, Evans also struck out two batters to improve to 2-0 on the season. Lane Hale, meanwhile, took the loss for Cairo by giving seven runs in 5 1/3 innings.
New Franklin also out-hit Cairo 6-2, with Jerrod Riley going 2-for-3 with two singles and one RBI. Dalton Johnson was 1-for-3 with a double and one RBI. Blake Carleton was 1-for-2 with one double while Hunter Rohlfing added one single and one RBI and Zach Evans with one single.
In the JV game, New Franklin defeated Cairo by a score of 6-5.
The Bulldogs, 3-0 on the season, trailed Cairo 5-3 after 2 1/2 before rallying back with three runs in the bottom-half of the third.
Dalton Johnson picked up the win in relief for New Franklin. Mason Bailey started the game and struck out one batter while giving up two runs in one inning. Auston Jones then came in and pitched one inning in relief and struck out three batters. Then, to finish the game, Johnson pitched one inning and allowed three runs on three walks while striking out two.
Johnson also doubled and drove in two runs for New Franklin. Dustin Mehrhoff and Austin Jones each had a double and one RBI while Koy Harris added one single.
