The Boonville Pirates wrestling team had more than the Hannibal Pirates to overcome Tuesday night in NCMC action at the Windsor gymnasium.
With six open weight classes compared to Hannibal’s one, the Pirate wrestlers knew before the match even started that they had an uphill battle trailing by a score of 30-0. But even then the deficit was just too much to overcome as Hannibal recorded wins in four out of the seven matches for a 57-24 victory.
While the loss dropped Boonville to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the NCMC, head coach Christian Stock said he thought the team wrestled really tough last night even though they lost the dual.
“I was very pleased with the effort of all the wrestlers,” Stock said. “We had three matches where we got caught in a bad position and couldn’t get out of it. This is a match where the opens that we had really showed how it affects the outcome of a dual. All in all a solid match from top to bottom for our wrestlers.”
Although the wins were few and far between for the Pirate wrestlers, the ones they did get were impressive to say the least with all three coming by pins. In the 145-pound weight class, freshman Charlie Pumel raised his season record to 10-6 by pinning Hannibal’s Drake Johnston in 51 seconds. Meanwhile, in the 160-pound weight class, senior Andrew Garrison improved to 10-6 by recording a first period pin against Austin Carroll by the same identical time of 51 seconds. Then, in the 182-pound weight class, junior Joel Concannon won by a pin against Gary Meyers in 1:15 to raise his record for the season to 10-3.
In other matches on the night, Gavin Vollmer lost by a pin in the 132-pound weight class against Nigel McIntosh in 2:22. At 170, Trey Schler was pinned by Hannibal’s Taylor Pritchett in 1:15. At 195, junior Lucas Gerke lost by a pin against Hannibal’s Austin Hawes in 4:08 but only trailed 4-2 at the end of the first period and 4-3 after two. Meanwhile, in the 220-pound weight class, junior Keandre Anderson wrestled Hannibal’s Harry Vessell in a close match while trailing 5-2 after the first period and 8-5 in the second. However, in the third period, Vessell picked up two more points and then hung on for a 10-7 victory.
The loss dropped Vollmer to 0-11 on the season while Schler fell to 4-8, Gerke 7-6 and Anderson 7-4.
The Boonville Pirates wrestling team will compete next in the 13th Annual Spartan Dual Tournament at Moberly Area Community College Activity Center in Moberly on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 18-19.
With a total of 10 teams competing in the dual tournament, Coach Stock said every team will wrestle a minimum of eight matches.
