The Boonville Lady Pirates basketball team, with only two starters back from last year’s team which finished third in the Final Four, found out just where they stood Wednesday night in a Jamboree at Father Tolton High School in Columbia.
While facing a quarterfinal team from last year in Southern Boone and a much improved Father Tolton team along with Class 2 Sturgeon, the Lady Pirates came away with a record of 2-1.
Boonville opened the Jamboree by beating Southern Boone 24-6 and then won 21-10 in the second game against Sturgeon. Meanwhile, in the third game against Father Tolton, the Lady Pirates fell by a score of 19-13 after playing back-to-back games.
Boonville Lady Pirates basketball coach Jaryt Hunziker said after 2 1/2 weeks of playing against each other, it was nice to finally play someone different.
“We have a very competitive Jamboree, including the likes of quarterfinalist Southern, the much improved Father Tolton with some great additions, and Class 2A Sturgeon,” Hunziker said. “This year I love the fact that it is on a Wednesday instead of at the end of the week because it gives us a little bit more time to work on things we see need improved. The coaching staff and I saw a lot of positives tonight that we can build on along with some things that should get better in time.
“The girls did a great job of sharing and moving the basketball. We still need to be more disciplined at setting tougher screens and getting the ball inside when allowed. I was very pleased with our intensity on defense and looking to get deflections and set good traps. We have always taken pride in not getting beat in defensive transition by getting our press set up quickly but tonight I thought we struggled with that a big. We felt that our rebounding effort has improved some from year’s past which has always been one of our weaknesses. Jamie and Abbie Lemmons hit the boards well. Paige Renfrow is improving day to day so it was great seeing her getting deflections, steals and knocking down open shots like we are use to seeing. Overall, I was very pleased with our effort from the girls. Like I have said before we have a great group that play hard for each other.”
In the game against Southern Boone, the Lady Pirates led 10-2 after the first-six minutes and then outscored the Lady Eagles 14-4 in the second six-minute period. Then, in the second game against Sturgeon, the Lady Pirates jumped out on top 7-4 after one and then outscored the Bulldogs 14-6 in the second period. As for the game against Father Tolton, the Lady Trailblazers led 9-3 after the first period and then matched Boonville with 10 points in the second period.
Paige Renfrow led all scorers on the night with 12 points along with two rebounds and two steals.
Brynn Edwards had nine points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist while Millie Moyer added eight points, four steals, three rebounds and one assist, Camryn Monteer with seven points and one rebound, Hannah Fuemmeler with six points, Abbie Lemmons with five points, seven rebounds and one steal, Jamie Lemmons with five points and seven rebounds, Cali Jo McAreavy with four points and two rebounds, Jessica Luscombe with two points and two rebounds and Kayla Johnson with two rebounds.
