Lance arrived last night. The drive to the San Diego airport to pick him up was complicated by driving rain. The airport is in downtown, so it is quite a rigamaroll to get there and back. To get back on the freeway, you end up going through residential neighborhoods. I can't imagine those people living so close to such ridiculous amounts of traffic.

Today, we went to the Birch Aquarium. Not a gigantic exhibit, but worthwhile. Any insight into the ocean ecology is valuable for me. You look out over that mass of water and wonder what goes on underneath the waves.

Beautiful fish, ugly fish, big fish, small fish, sharks, jellyfish (amazing) from small to big, living coral, star fish, and so on. Oh, and sea horses.

The exhibits are educational as well, showing the effects of man on the oceans, both through climate change and garbage. Most sobering is a floating mass of plastic in the middle of the Pacific which may be as large as the state of Texas. Most of the plastic has broken up into small bits, but it is harmful to marine life nonetheless.
