Kellen Brownfield scored a game-high 16 points, and teammate Reece Lang added 13 as the Ss. Peter & Paul boys seventh grade basketball team beat Mexico 42-28 Wednesday night in the Fulton Tournament.
The Warriors, 3-3 on the season, trailed Mexico 16-9 after first period’s end and 22-19 at the half before rallying back with a 23-6 advantage in the second half for the victory.
Ss. Peter & Paul coach Evan Oswald said the boys played a great game on both ends of the court.
“I thought all six players really contributed to help get this team win,” Oswald said. “Eli Bechtel and Lucas Ziegelbein did a phenomenal job shutting down their key outside shooter. Zack Watring and Landon Weaver really owned the boards in the second half and played with such passion. That started to rub off on the rest of the team. Kellen Brownfield and Reece Lang continued to attack and stay aggressive throughout the game. I was extremely impressed and very proud of this team tonight. It was another great night to be a Warrior.”
Zack Watring finished the game with nine points for Ss. Peter & Paul while Landon Weaver chipped in four.
As for the Ss. Peter & Paul girls seventh grade basketball team, they fell against Mexico 44-17.
The Lady Warriors, 0-6 on the season, trailed Mexico 28-5 at the half and 38-13 after three quarters of play. The Lady Bulldogs also held a 6-4 scoring edge in the final period.
Ss. Peter & Paul coach Morgan Sprigg said Mexico was a very strong and aggressive team. “They came out very quick and ready to play,” Sprigg said. “Our girls came out slow in the first half. We were short a couple of players, which made it somewhat difficult to sub. The third quarter is when we came to play. We may not have come back, but the girls played how they are taught. EmmaLah Penny was strong on the boards and played aggressively inside. Sydney McGuire and Grace Bronakowski did very well with shooting the ball and finding open areas on the court. Once again I am impressed with the girl’s actions last night and we are improving every day.”
Aaryn Sampo had 14 points and Raigan Playter 11 for Mexico.
For Ss. Peter & Paul, EmmaLah Penny had seven points, 11 rebounds and five steals.
Grace Bronakowski finished the game with six points, five rebounds, one steal and one assist while Maggie Adair added two points, three steals, two assists and one rebound, Sydney McGuire with two points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal, Georgie Wright with two steals and one assist and Maelynn Brengarth with one steal.
