Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been indicted for his suspected role in the Boston Marathon bombings, as well as in the death of MIT Police Officer Sean Collier, The United States Department of Justice announced Thursday. Tsarnaev has been charged with 30 counts, including the use of a weapon of mass destruction that killed three people and injured more than 200. Other charges include malicious destruction of property by means of an explosive device resulting in death, use of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence and carjacking resulting in serious bodily injury. Report: Boston bombing suspect communicating with officials "This indictment is the result of exemplary cooperation between federal prosecutors and a wide range of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to investigate the horrific attacks on the Boston Marathon two months ago," Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement. "The Department is firmly committed to achieving justice on behalf of all who were affected by these senseless acts of violence. And today's action proves our unyielding resolve to hold accountable - to the fullest extent of the law - anyone who would threaten the American people or attempt to terrorize our great cities."
Tsarnaev's brother, Tamerlan, is believed to have played a major role in the bombings, as well as in the carjacking and the death of Collier. Tamerlan was killed following a shootout with police in Watertown, Mass. four days after the Boston Marathon tragedy.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev could face life in prison or the death penalty on 17 of the charges. He is scheduled to be arraigned on July 10.
