Win improves Boonville's record to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the NCMC
The Boonville Lady Pirates volleyball team wanted nothing more than to make a statement to the rest of the teams in the conference last night while hosting the Kirksville Lady Tigers at the Windsor gymnasium.
After being swept last week against the Columbia Rock Bridge Bruins in two straight for the first loss of the season, the Lady Pirates wanted nothing more than to right the ship against Kirksville.
As it turned out, Boonville road the ship all the way to a two set victory against Kirksville 25-13 and 25-16.
The win improved Boonville's record to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the NCMC.
Boonville volleyball coach Susie Stone said once the girls got Kirksville's middle under control, they were able to capitalize on better blocking at the net and able to deter the hitting of Kirksville. "The girls got on a strong serving role and kept Kirksville out of system most of the second half," Stone said. "We are still working on cleaning up all our communication errors. I felt at times the game was slow paced and we need to continue to push the tempo and force the middle when we have the chance."
The Lady Pirates definitely left little room for chance against Kirksville by reeling off three straight points to start the match all by the hand of senior Zoe Root.
Boonville never relinquished the lead after that while dominating Kirksville in every facet of the match while hitting double digits on the serving of sophomore Kylie Hohensee to go up 23-13. Hohensee also had the final-two points in the match as Kirksville closed out the game with back-to-back hitting errors.
In the second game, the Lady Pirates had a few unforced errors and as a result trailed by a score of 6-4 after a kill by senior Nichole Cook. Meanwhile, after playing to three ties at 6-6, 7-7 and 8-8, Boonville came back and reeled off three straight points on hitting errors by Kirksville and a block at the net by Raven Stone and Taylor Fry to make it 11-8.
Kirksville never got any closer than two points for the rest of the match as the Lady Pirates continued to swing away at the much smaller front line of Kirksville to extend its lead to seven at 17-10.
Then, after going up 21-12 after three straight points on a kill by senior Sam Ivy and two Kirksville errors, Boonville came back and closed out the match on a hit out of bounds by the Lady Tigers.
Junior Kristin Hoff led the Lady Pirates with 17 digs along with seven service points with two aces and three kills on 4 of 5 attack attempts.
Senior Bailey Pfeiffer finished the match with nine service points with one ace along with eight digs, eight kills on 13 of 15 attack attempts, seven assists and one block. Kylie Hohensee had 10 service points with two aces, eight digs, one assist and 1 of 1 on attack attempts, while Zoe Root added 11 service points with one ace, nine assists and three digs, Mariah Root with seven service points with two aces, five digs, one assist and 1 of 1 on attack attempts, Raven Stone with three assists, two digs, two kills on 4 of 4 attack attempts and one block, Taylor Fry with three kills on 5 of 5 attack attempts, two blocks and two digs, Morgan Edwards with five blocks, one dig and 1 of 2 on attack attempts, Anna Davis with three kills on 6 of 8 attack attempts and two digs, Sam Ivy with two kills on 3 of 4 attack attempts with one block and one dig, Anna Terlep with three digs nd Daryl Fagan with one dig.
In the JV match, Boonville fell to Kirksville 11-25, 25-17 and 8-25.
Boonville JV coach Carlei Wies said the girls started off the match aggressively by doing a great job of picking up tips and hitting well. "After a few tough serves from Kirksville we started to lose our momentum. We struggled to get back in our passing and hitting groove in Games 2 and 3."
Freshman Emma Goff led the JV team with 15 service points with 10 aces, seven assists and six digs.
Katarina Xufuris had 14 service points with nine aces along with seven digs and one kill, while Makenzie Ficken added 10 assists, seven digs and three service points with one ace, Bridget Fischer with 10 digs, four service points with one ace, two kills and one assist, Sydney Poindexter with six service points with one ace, five digs, four kills and one block, Kelsi Dillender with six digs, three kills and one block, Jessica Luscombe with four kills, four blocks and two digs, Emilyn O'Laughlin with four service points with one ace, three kills and two digs, Holly Brady with six digs, Anna Terlep with two kills, two digs and one block, Daryl Fagan with four digs, Sophie Taube with three digs and Keely Fenton with one dig.
