The biggest challenge surrounding the Pilot Grove boys basketball team last night wasn’t the Malta Bend Tigers.

The biggest challenge was maintaining their intensity for 32 minutes.

As it turned out, Pilot Grove answered the call and then some while beating Malta Bend by a score of 72-46.

“For the most part things ran like a clock in the first quarter,” Grunden said. “Our intensity slowly went down after that and we gave far too much away to Malta Bend. We did do better at pushing the ball, but we will need to work more on our transition game before we play again next week.”

While it would be hard to find fault in any aspect of the team’s play last night, the Tigers one drawback may have been the 13 turnovers.

But even then it mattered little as Pilot Grove scored the game’s first 24 points with four of the five starters scoring at least two points.

The Tigers also led 21-0 after first period’s end and then upped that lead to 28 (39-11) at the 1:45 mark in the first half after a basket by junior Sean Lorenz.

Although Malta Bend fell one point short of matching the Tigers in the second quarter, they were clearly no match for Pilot Grove while trailing 39-17 at the break.

The second half was a carbon copy of the first as the Tigers ran when they wanted to and pulled it out to slow it down. Pilot Grove also went on a 14-0 run during a three minute span in the third quarter to extend the lead to 29 at 56-27 with 1:07 left.

While outscoring Malta Bend 17-13 in the third to go up 56-30, Pilot Grove came out in the final period with most of the starters on the bench and matched the Tigers with 16 points to win by 26.
Kendall Kraus had the high game for Pilot Grove, who improved to 12-10 overall and 3-1 in the CCAA, with 19 points.

Jake Leverton chipped in 14, Dylan Twenter 13, Sean Lorenz nine, Trevor Day eight, Scott Blank and Colten Glenn each with four and Brandon Brown with one.

For Malta Bend, Jared Armstrong tossed in 21 points while David Hostetter added 15.
In the JV game, Pilot Grove defeated Malta Bend 29-14.

Brandon Brown led all scorers in the game for Pilot Grove with eight points. Jake Leverton and Keaton Vollrath chipped in seven each while Scott Blank added six and Alex Twenter with one.
