It didn’t take long for the Sturgeon boys and girls basketball teams to get its point across last night in the semifinal round of the 82nd annual New Franklin Invitational Tournament.


As the No. 1 seeds, the Lady Bulldogs beat fourth-seeded Westran 47-20 while the Sturgeon boys prevailed over the Hornets 67-52.


It didn’t take long for the Sturgeon boys and girls basketball teams to get its point across last night in the semifinal round of the 82nd annual New Franklin Invitational Tournament.

As the No. 1 seeds, the Lady Bulldogs beat fourth-seeded Westran 47-20 while the Sturgeon boys prevailed over the Hornets 67-52.

In other games last night in the tournament, the No. 3 Slater girls knocked off second-seeded New Franklin 42-31 while the No. 2 Fayette boys prevailed over third-seeded Pilot Grove by a score of 70-53.
Tournament action will continue tonight, with the Keytesville girls playing Fayette in the seventh-place game at 4:30 p.m., followed by the Slater boys versus Keytesville in the seventh-place game at 6, Pilot Grove girls versus Sweet Springs in the fifth place game at 7:30 and the New Franklin boys versus Sweet Springs in the consolation finals at 9.

In action on Saturday, the Westran girls will take on New Franklin in the third-place game at 2 p.m., followed by the Westran boys versus Pilot Grove for third place at 3:30, Sturgeon girls versus Slater in the championship game at 5 and the Sturgeon boys versus Fayette for the title at 6:30.

Krissy Arends had 13 points and Brook Willits 10 for the Sturgeon girls, who led Westran 9-3 after one, 17-4 at the half and 32-10 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, the Lady Bulldogs outscored Westran 15-10 for the victory.

Bryanna Cervny had seven points in the game for Westran.

The Sturgeon boys also led Westran from start to finish while going up 20-12 after one, 34-19 at the half and 49-39 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, the Bulldogs held a 18-13 advantage to win the game by 15.

Lane Arends paced all scorers in the game for Sturgeon with 18 points while Dominic Johnson added 13.
For Westran, Tyler Aulber had 33 points and Drake Buffington chipped in 11.

In the third game last night, the New Franklin Lady Bulldogs basketball team found itself down by eight (10-2)?after first period’s end before rallying back with a 12-6 scoring edge in the second quarter to cut the lead to two at 16-14. Slater, meanwhile, added some distance in the second half by outscoring New Franklin 26-17 for the victory.

Brooke Clemons led the scoring attack for Slater with 10 points while Ana Jackson chipped in eight.
For New Franklin, who dropped to 5-3 on the season, freshman Jasmyne Boggs finished the game with nine points, eight rebounds and five assists.Sam Kircher also had nine points in the game along with two assists, two steals and one rebound while Kalani Pihana contributed five points and six rebounds, Val Dobson with four points, two rebounds and one steal, Aly Hundley with two points, two rebounds and two steals and Sara Montgomery with with two points.

The Pilot Grove boys also had a slow start the Fayette Falcons while trailing 16-6 after one, 30-16 at the half and 51-36 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, the Falcons all but sealed the victory by outscoring Pilot Grove 19-17.

Fayette, 7-2 on the season, was led by junior Bruce Marshall with a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. He also had four blocked shots. Lorenzo Estes finished the game with 16 points while Spencer Gerald added 11.

For Pilot Grove, who dropped to 8-2 on the season, Jacob Schuster netted 19 while Colby Kraus had 13, Brent Gerke nine, Sean Lorenz six, Aaron Schuster with five and Kendall Kraus with one.
