Thursday, October 5, AAUW met at Hartman Village in Boonville. Their guest speaker for the evening was John F. Tinker. Mr. Tinker spoke to about 12 attendees and several others by ZOOM about Book Banning in Missouri. Tinker, founder of the John F. Tinker Foundation in Fayette, explained how book banning is a form of censorship and violates the First Amendment. Speeches, books, and symbolic speech are all protected under the First Amendment. Tinker referenced the 1969 US Supreme Court case Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District which remains a viable and frequently cited court precedent. (Photo by Elizabeth Davis)
