Pilot Grove -

For four innings last night at Pilot Grove, the Fayette Falcons baseball team had the Tigers thinking about a possible upset with the score knotted at 0-0.

But then in the bottom-half of the fifth, Pilot Grove took the game over like it has so many times this season by exploding for six runs en route to a 8-0 victory.

While the win improved Pilot Grove’s record to 13-1 overall, head coach Todd Maher said the game against Fayette was one of the slowest starting games he has ever coached. “I thought Jordan Williams threw a great game but he was backed up with some good defense,” Maher said. “Our offense did not get started until the fifth inning, when we finally broke the 0-0 tie and scored six runs. Fayette’s pitching was solid, but their defense really stepped up and made some solid stops. My hat goes off to them.”

The Tigers definitely had their hands full early on while locked in a pitcher’s duel for four innings. Meanwhile, after holding Fayette scoreless in its half of the fifth, Pilot Grove came back and broke the game wide open in the bottom-half of the inning with six runs on four hits and two fielding errors. Then, in the sixth, the Tigers added two more runs to make it 8-0 on a walk by Jake Meisenheimer and a single by Jordan Williams.

As for the pitching in the game, Jordan Williams picked up the complete-game victory by striking out 14 batters and giving up just one hit and three walks. Jeremy Dawson meanwhile, took the loss for Fayette by giving up six runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three batters in five innings.
