For the second time in as many matches the Boonville Pirates wrestling team had the kind of match to forget last night on the road against the Kirksville Tigers.

One day after losing to the Centralia Panthers 60-18, the Pirate wrestlers had an even more difficult task last night against the Class 2 defending state champions. And as expected, the Tigers defeated Boonville rather handily by recording wins in seven out of nine matches for a 69-12 victory.

While the loss dropped Boonville to 3-8 overall and 2-4 in the NCMC, head coach Kyle Newham said the Pirates lost some matches that were highly contested. “We just came out on the wrong side,” Newham said. “We did have some bright spots. James Dowling was down 5-1 at the end of the first period and was able to battle back and get a big win, and Austin was able to beat a returning state qualifier. After the past two nights we have some things to work on and we need to get healthy before this weekend and the district tournament.”
