Boonville, Mo. -

The Boonville boys junior varsity basketball team salvaged the third-place game in the Mexico JV Tournament last night by beating the North Callaway Thunderbirds by a score of 62-51.

In the championship game last night, the Mexico Bulldogs beat the Fulton Hornets in overtime by a score of 56-49.

While the win improved Boonville’s JV record to 11-6 overall, head coach Tim Edwards said the game was a lot closer than the final score indicated.

The Pirates definitely had their work cut out against North Callaway while leading by just three (10-7) after one and by two (25-23) at the half. Meanwhile, in the third quarter, the Thunderbirds rallied back with a 14-13 scoring edge to cut the lead to one at 38-37. However, in the final period, Boonville all but made it official by outscoring North Callaway 24-14 to win the game by 11.

Thurman led the scoring attack in the game for Boonville with 16 points. Austin Rapp chipped in 15, followed by Wes Davis with nine, Keith Poindexter six, Jalen Poindexter, Damario Walker and Danny Rohrbough each with four and Cass Quinlan and Holden Hinkle with two points each.
For North Callaway, Zac Eades had 12 points while Justin Murphy and Jared Graves added 10 points each.
