Boonville’s Junior Babe Ruth traveling team had a tough road over the weekend while playing a doubleheader on Saturday at Hannibal and then turning around and playing another doubleheader on Sunday against Macon.
In the doubleheader on Saturday against Hannibal, Boonville dropped the first game by a score of 5-4 but came back and won the second game 6-3 for the split. Then, on Sunday against Macon’s Junior Legion baseball team, Boonville fell in two straight games by the scores of 11-7 and 10-5.
While playing at Mark Twain High School on Saturday, Hannibal jumped out on top with one run in the bottom-half of the first only to have Boonville rally back with one run in each of the second and third innings of play to go up by a score of 2-1.
Unfortunately for Boonville, they never led again in the ballgame as Hannibal came back and plated four more runs in the bottom-half of the third to make it 4-2. Then, after both teams failed to score in the fourth inning, Boonville came back and tacked on two more runs in the fifth to cut the lead to one at 5-4.
Both teams failed to score in the sixth with Boonville again putting up a goose egg in the seventh for the loss.
Grant Davis took the loss on the mound for Boonville by giving up five runs on five hits while striking out five.
Devon Hohensee led the hitting attack in the game for Boonville with two singles.
Of course the second game was a different story with Boonville pushing across one run in the first and two again in the top-half of the fourth to go up by a score of 3-0. Then, after Hannibal plated two runs in the bottom-half of the fourth, Boonville came back and tacked on three in the fifth to lead by a score of 6-2. Meanwhile, in the sixth inning, Hannibal plated another run to cut the lead in half.
Kyle VanderLinden picked up the complete-game victory for Boonville by striking out eight batters and giving up three runs on five hits and one walk.
Boonville also out-hit Hannibal 8-5, with Kellen Kempf going 2-for-4 with two singles and two RBIs.
In the games on Sunday, Macon Junior Legion broke out on top with two runs in the bottom-half of the first only to have Boonville rally back with one run in the second and three again in the third to go ahead by a score of 4-2.
