One week after winning the Lebanon Junior Varsity Tournament, the Boonville Pirates freshmen baseball team couldn’t have picked a worse time to go in a slump while competing in the Smith-Cotton C-Team Tournament over the weekend.
While losing to the host team 4-2 in the opening round, Boonville came back and dropped the next game as well against Jefferson City by a score of 9-5.
Boonville freshmen coach Roger Stone said this was not the way they wanted to end the season. “We gave Jeff City seven runs by either booting the ball or throwing it around,” Stone said. “This was the worst defensive game we played all year long. We hit the ball well by collecting 12 hits but again, we couldn’t string them together. We put the ball in play and we hit the ball hard but right at their players. I knew it was going to be one of those days when in the second inning we hit two deep drives to right field and the outfielders made two circus catches. Our pitchers threw the ball well but our defense let them down. This was a great bunch of players to coach this season, overall, we had a very successful season and I know these players will have bright futures in the Pirate program.”
