The Boonville Pirates wrestling team closed out the regular season on a disappointing note last night on the road by losing to the Kirksville Tigers 69-12. Going up against one of the top teams in the state in Class 2 isn’t exactly what the Boonville Pirates wrestling team had in mind last night in the regular season finale at Kirksville.

With the district tournament next Saturday in Clinton, the Pirates had a chance to make a statement if not by beating the Tigers by at least keeping the match close.

Boonville did neither as Kirksville recorded wins in all but two matches for a 69-12 victory.

While the loss dropped Boonville to 5-10 overall and 1-5 in the NCMC, head coach Christian Stock said facing the No. 1 or 2 team in Class 2 last night with multiple returning state champs, plus two or more injuries or sickness to Boonville wrestlers was not a good thing.

“We knew going up there that we had a tough match coming,” Stock said. “The two bright spots that we had were Cook and Hammers.”

Cook, 34-1 entering the match in the 220-pound weight class, had little trouble against Kirksville’s Ivan McVay while recording a second period pin in 3:26. Hammers, meanwhile, improved to 20-15 in the heavyweight division by recording a third-period pin against Clay Darr in 3:37.

Stock said Cook came out and got a take down, then gave up a escape, took him back down, got a nearfall for three and rode McVay out for the remainder of the first. “In the second we chose neutral and got a takedown and then a pin,” Stock said. “This is what we had discussed before the match that we needed to do.”

As for Hammers, Stock said he had a good match as well last night. “We gave up the first takedown and wrestled on the mat the entire first period without giving up any nearfalls,” Stock said. “In the second period, we chose down, got a reversal to and then pinned him.”

The rest of the night was like a bad dream for Boonville. Starting in the 145-pound weight class, Kirksville recorded six straight wins, four by forfeits, to lead the Pirates 36-0. At 145, sophomore wrestler Dylan Snapp lost by fall to Kirksville’s Jesse Griffel in 1:56. Meanwhile, at 152, senior Jake Nelson was pinned in 58 seconds by Chris Hooper.

The Tigers also picked up forfeits at 160, 170, 182 and 195.

Of course the Pirates avoided the shutout with wins at 220 and 285.

However it was all Kirksville the rest of the way as the Tigers came back with two straight pins at 106 and 113, with Ethan Rentschler winning by fall over Jeff Ruffalo in 33 seconds and Matt Kelly by pin over Kristen Stevens in 3:29.
