With two games left in the regular season and the district tournament beginning next week in Eldon, the Boonville Pirates basketball team wanted nothing more than to build a little momentum for the post-season.
As the No. 4 seed in the Class 4 District 10 Tournament, the Pirates could start their streak last night with a win against state-ranked Mexico. However a cold spell in the first-three quarters all but prevented Boonville from starting a new streak in a 58-34 loss against the Bulldogs.
While the loss dropped Boonville to 10-12 overall and 3-7 in the North Central Missouri Conference, head coach Scott Floyd said the Pirates were simply limited offensively.
“Damario Walker played sparingly because of ankle problems and as a result we were stymied on the offensive end,” Floyd said. “We missed a bunch of lay-ups and free throws in the first quarter and we suddenly found ourselves playing from behind for the entire night. The kids were able to get into sets but simply could not score the ball. Gauge Sharp had a decent offensive night as he played point and contributed a team-high 10 points. We have to find another scorer for us to be successful for the remainder of the season.”
Of course it doesn’t help when you are looking at a 19-9 deficit after the first eight minutes of the ballgame or a 31-17 score at the half. Unfortunately for Boonville, that’s the hand they were dealt with as well in the second half as Mexico came out and outscored the Pirates 13-3 in the third to go up 44-20. Trailing by 24 after the first 24 minutes of the ballgame, Boonville did have a silver lining as they battled back and matched Mexico with 14 points in the final period.
Jon Anderson had 16 and Jason Nunnelly 11 for Mexico.
For Boonville, freshman Gauge Sharp led all scorers with 10 points, one rebound and one assist.
Jay Barnhart finished the game with eight points, seven rebounds and two steals while Holden Hinkle added eight points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal, Tyler Peterson with four points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal, Ethan Kempf with two points, Damario Walker with one point and five rebounds and Gus Kemp with one point.
The Pirates also finished the game hitting 13 of 40 shots from the field for 33 percent and 6 of 15 from the foul line for 40 percent. Mexico converted on 11 of 14 shots from the line for 79 percent.
As for the Boonville Pirates JV team, they also fell on the road last night 55-33.

While returning to Mexico, where they met the Bulldogs in the championship of their own tournament in which Boonville won in overtime, the Pirates were nowhere near close last night while trailing from the first quarter on.
The Bulldogs led 13-11 after first period’s end and then outscored Boonville 14-5 in the second to go up 27-16 at the half. Mexico also held a 28-17 advantage in the second half to win the game by 22.
While the loss dropped Boonville’s JV to 11-8 overall and 4-6 in the NCMC, head coach Kent Peterson stated that his team struggled to put the ball in the basket.
“We had opportunities in the second and third quarter to make shots and just couldn’t get the ball to go in the basket scoring only 11-points,” Peterson said. “A tell-tell sign for us in our turnovers came back in this game as we had 24-turnovers which limited our offensive opportunities. We didn’t turn them over much as we had only five steals in the game. Give Mexico credit, they were ready for us after we beat them a few weeks ago. They hit seven three-point shots for the game, which then opened up their inside game as we extended our zone against their shooters. We had opportunities in the middle quarters to match them but just could not sustain our offensive consistency and as the game wore on we started speeding up on the offensive end. The great thing about basketball is we get a chance to bounce back as we play Marshall tonight.”
Mexico was led by Matt Ridgway with 10 and Jake Anderson, Kamden Ekern and Tyler Bracht each with eight points.
Ethan Sander had team-high for Boonville with seven points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Ethan Kempf finished the game with six points, four rebounds and one blocked shot while Jashon Hockaday added six points, two assists and one rebound, Clayton Lang with five points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal, Alec Viertel with four points, three rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot, Tanner Green with three points and five rebounds, Jared Oser with two points, one assist and one steal, Dalton Hodge with two steals and Connor Loesing with two rebounds and one steal.
For the game, the Pirates also made good on 15 of 48 shots from the field for 31 percent and 1 of 2 from the foul line for 50 percent.
