The Boonville Pirates basketball team had another one of those would’ve, should’ve, could’ve games Saturday at home against the Marshall Owls.
While trailing for pretty much the entire game against Marshall, the Pirates closed the gap to within one with 2:01 left. And then with several chances to take the lead against the Owls, Boonville either failed miserably or couldn’t get the ball to fall in the basket in the closing seconds while dropping a 76-71 decision.
Boonville coach Chris Shikles said a lot of the credit has to go to the Marshall kids.
While the loss dropped Boonville to 4-15 overall and 1-8 in the NCMC, Marshall improved to 4-16 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
Xavier Foster finished the game with 13 points while Carter Austin chipped in 11.
For Boonville, Allers finished the game with a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He also had three assists and two steals. Jason Luster also chipped in 20 points along with four rebounds, two steals and two assists while Rhett Quinlan added 19 points and 19 rebounds along with two steals and two assists, Michael Luscombe with seven points, four rebounds and one steal, Austin Rapp with five points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist, Jordan Shikles with two assists, one rebound and one steal, Wes Davis with three assists and one steal and Cass Quinlan with two assists and two rebounds.
In the junior varsity game, Marshall defeated Boonville 52-47.
The Pirates, dropping to 11-7 overall and 3-6 in the NCMC, trailed Marshall 15-9 after first period’s end and 20-19 at the half. Meanwhile, in the second half, the Owls outscored Boonville 32-28 for the victory.
Cody Wright had the game-high for Marshall with 25 points.
For Boonville, Austin Rapp chipped in 13, Danny Rohrbough 12, Austin Rapp and Damario Walker each with seven, Holden Hinkle with five, Cass Quinlan with two and Jalen Poindexter with one.
