It didn’t come as a surprise that Chesterfield captured the championship in the Cal Ripken 11-year-old State Tournament yesterday at the Little League field in Harley park.
After all, they were the only undefeated team going into the championship against SEMO North.
Although Chesterfield wound up winning 17-4 on 18 hits, the first-three innings were back and forth with Chesterfield providing the first knockout punch with three runs in the first and four again in the third to go up by a score of 7-0.
Of course SEMO North didn’t go down without a fight while rallying back with four runs in the bottom-half of the third to cut the lead to three at 7-4.
Unfortunately for SEMO North, they had little to show after that as Chesterfield reeled off 10 unanswered runs over the next-three innings with one in the fourth, four again in the fifth and six in the sixth for the victory.
Michael Cessna picked up the win on the mound for Chesterfield while Winston Welter took the loss for SEMO North.
Cessna went the distance and gave up five runs on four hits while striking out five.
Welter, meanwhile, started the game and pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed six runs on five hits and four walks while striking out one. Dawson Mayo then came in and pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief and surrendered six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out one. Meanwhile, after Ryan Wilfawn pitched one-plus inning and issued five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out one, Welter came back in and pitched 1/3 inning with no runs, no hits and no walks.
As for the hitting in the game for Chesterfield, Chase Goulet went 4-for-5 with three singles, a home run and four RBIs.
Michael Cessna also had four hits, one of which went for a double, and one RBI. Max Spitzmiller was 3-for-4 with three singles and three RBIs while Eric Rothermich added three singles and one RBI, Andrew Schofield with two singles, Carter Williams with a RBI-single and Alex Hackworth with one single.
For SEMO North, Dawson Mayo went 2-for-2 with two singles. Braden Cox had a home run and three RBIs while Preston Welter added a single and one RBI and Ryan Wilthong with one single.
