Two days after struggling to beat the Prairie Home Panthers in the championship in the CCAA Tournament in Otterville, the Otterville boys basketball team ventured to Prairie Home for another make or break game in league play.

Except this time, the Eagles had little trouble while leading Prairie Home from start to finish for a 62-41 victory.

As for the Otterville girls, who have also been next to unbeatable this season, they used a 20-1 run in the second quarter to upend the Lady Panthers 50-14.

Ryan Benny had 22 points and Paul Oswald 20 for Otterville, 15-4 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA, who led Prairie Home 11-6 after one, 28-19 at the half and 42-32 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, the Eagles outscored Prairie Home 20-9 to win the game by 21.

Prairie Home coach Jesse Oswald said he thought this was going to be a lot closer ballgame after the way we played them close Saturday. “We had too many turnovers early and we were forced to play catch up,” Oswald said. “Against a good team like Otterville, teams aren’t going to have much success playing catch up and trying to go on big runs to get back into the ballgame. We came out and played very lazy and passive for the first-two quarters and we couldn’t get anything going. Otterville is a very good offensive and defensive team and once they built a lead, they really take care of the ball and don’t give up anything easy on defense.”

Junior Trever Huth had 18 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two assists in the game for Prairie Home, who dropped to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA. Rayce Kendrick finished the game with 17 points, four assists, two steals and one rebound while Sam Distler added four points, six rebounds and two assists and Kody Utterback with two points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist.

Prairie Home also finished the game hitting on 21 of 53 shots from the field for 40 percent and 3 of 10 from the line for 30 percent.

As for the Prairie Home girls, they trailed Otterville 15-4 after one, 35-5 at the half and 45-8 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, the Lady Panthers outscored Otterville 6-5.

Tori Schoen had 15 points and Amy Oleynik 12 for Otterville, 19-1 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA.
For Prairie Home, who dropped to 6-9 overall and 0-2 in league play, Taylor Zey had six points and six rebounds along with one steal.

Coach Oswald said the girls played a very good Otterville team and they forced the Lady Panthers into making a lot of silly and unforced errors.

“They are a good pressing team and I thought that we did a very good job of breaking their press, but then we couldn’t settle down and get anything on the offensive end,” Oswald said. “We forced a lot of passes that were thrown away or thrown right into a defender because we got nervous. I thought that the times we actually settled down and ran an offense, we looked good and got what we needed, but we got too far ahead of ourselves.”
