With the season winding down in the North Central Missouri Conference, the Boonville Pirates basketball team took another major hit last night on the road by losing to the Hannibal Pirates 67-57.
Hannibal, the No. 1 team in the NCMC, outscored Boonville in three out of four quarters of play and led the Pirates 19-8 after one, 33-20 at the half and 56-29 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, Boonville had its best quarter by far by outscoring Hannibal 28-11 to cut the lead back to 10.
Boonville Pirates basketball coach Scott Floyd said the Pirates ran into a buzzaw on Hannibal’s Courtwarming. “They are the best team in the conference and they showed it. I was very proud of how our kids continued to compete in the third and fourth quarters,” Floyd said. “We had some positive play on which to build on entering the final five games of the season. Gus Kemp came off the bench and provided much needed scoring by contributing 15 points, as did Tyler Peterson, who scored 12 points. Jay Barnhart was able to find his range and led the team in scoring and rebounding on the night.”
Christian Williams had 20 points and Connor Brown 13 for Hannibal.
For Boonville, Jay Barnhart led three players in double figures with 17 points and six rebounds.
Gus Kemp finished the game with 15 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal while Tyler Peterson added 12 points, two rebounds and two steals, Holden Hinkle with seven points and three rebounds, Damario Walker with four points, four rebounds, four steals and one assist, Gauge Sharp with two points, three rebounds and one assist, Ethan Kempf with two rebounds and Tanner Green with one rebound and one assist.
The Pirates also finished the game hitting 24 of 54 shots from the field for 44 percent and 3 of 6 from the line for 50 percent. Hannibal converted on 10 of 15 shots from the line for 60 percent.
As for the Boonville JV basketball team, they also had a slow start while trailing Hannibal 18-12 after one, 29-20 at the half and 38-33 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, Hannibal outscored Boonville 10-6 for the victory.
While the loss dropped Boonville to 6-7 overall and 2-5 in the NCMC, head coach Kent Peterson said even though the Pirates trailed 18-12 after one, they got off to a good start and were up 6-0 in the first-three minutes of the game.
“We missed some opportunities early to go up 10-12 points and Hannibal knocked four three-point shots in the first quarter,” Peterson said. “Overall, we played well offensively when we moved the ball and run our offense. The three areas we need to improve is our turnovers (17), rebound especially on the defensive end of the floor where we gave up far too many second chance points and our shooting percentage (38 percent) for the game. Our young guards handled their run and jump trapping defense well. Most of our turnovers were self-inflicted where we were not strong with the basketball. Tanner Green played well and Ethan Kempf was big on the boards for us. We have a busy week as we play in Mexico the next-two nights and then home on Friday against Marshall.”
