The Boonville boys junior varsity basketball team had a chance to showcase its skills on a different level last night while playing in the Mexico JV Tournament.

With only four teams making up the tournament at Mexico, JV coach Kent Peterson said this was a good bounce back win over a young Bowling Green team.

Of course Coach Peterson probably wasn’t expecting the Pirates to win by 26 over Bowling Green. But that’s exactly what happened as the Pirates jumped out to a 21-12 halftime lead and then outscored the Bobcats 27-10 in the second half for a convincing 48-22 victory.

“We were a little sluggish to start the game and had a little trouble running our offense in the first half,” Peterson said. “We played much better in the second half and were much better offensively. The key to the second half was our defensive intensity. We had 13 steals and did a good job of controlling their offense in the second half. We missed a few lay-ups or we would have really blown the game away, but we had 19 turnovers and missed out on some good opportunities.
“Ethan Sander played very well on both ends of the floor scoring 11 points and five steals. Connor Loesing knocked down some shots and had a couple of nice finishes at the rim and also scored 11 points. Tanner Green was solid and chipped in 9 points and Dalton Hodge came in and gave us a big lift defensively and with his intensity and aggressiveness. We will most likely play Mexico on Thursday night in the finals of the tournament. It will be fun and look forward to a good matchup with a good Mexico team.”

Ethan Sander and Connor Loesing tied for the game-high for Boonville, who improved to 7-7 on the season, with 11 points. Sander also finished the game with five steals, three rebounds and one assist while Loesing added six rebounds and one assist.

Tanner Green chipped in nine points, five rebounds, four steals, two assists and two blocked shots. Dalton Hodge contributed four points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist, while Ethan Kempf added four points, three rebounds and two blocked shots, Clayton Lang with four points, one rebound and one assist, Andrew Kueny with two points, two rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot, Alec Viertel with two points, one rebound and one steal, Jared Oser with one point, five rebounds and one steal, John Reese with two rebounds and one steal and Jashon Hockaday with one rebound.
For Bowling Green, Darren Feldewerth had six points while Adam Holt and Brian Moore added four points each.
