The Boonville Pirates wrestling team didn’t want to go into tonight’s match against the Class 2 defending state champions Kirksville Tigers trying to pick up the pieces from the night before against the Centralia Panthers.
But that’s exactly what the Pirates will do after suffering one of their worst losses of the season last night against Centralia 60-18.
While the loss dropped Boonville to 3-7 overall, head coach Kyle Newham said despite having a number of kids out due to injury and various reasons, th wrestlers still continued to fight hard.
“We have another tough test on Wednesday against the defending state champions on their senior night,” stated Newham. I thought that the matches we did win that we wrestled well and did things that we can build off of for Wednesday’s match.”
Getting everybody back would be a start. In the match last night against Centralia, the Pirates had seven open weight classes at 103, 112, 119, 125, 135, 145 and 152.
Centralia, meanwhile, was only open at 103.
So of the seven actual matches last night against Centralia, the Pirates finished 3-4 with wins at 171, 189 and 285.
