Boonville Pirates basketball coach Scott Floyd felt his team matched up well Friday night against the Marshall Owls.
While entering the game on a two-game skid, Floyd felt player for player the Pirates could take advantage of the opportunity. But more importantly, he thought the Pirates could win the game.
He was right. Not only did Boonville win 52-35, they also snapped a two-game skid to improve to 10-10 overall and 3-5 in the North Central Missouri Conference.
“I thought the first half we executed poorly against Marshall’s 2-3 zone,” Floyd said. “We missed a lot of easy shots and were unable to get into our half-court sets. However, in the second half were able to get into our offensive sets, run some clock and make better decisions on the offensive end of the court. We attacked the middle of the floor and the baseline resulting in some easy baskets. Our decision making was a lot better in the second half. Defensively, we were outstanding. While not playing man defense for a couple of games, we were able to get out on Marshall’s three-point shooters and contain their two leading scorers. Holding a conference foe to only 35 points is a tough task. But our kids were up to the challenge and came through with flying colors.”
Of course Floyd was probably thinking otherwise in the first quarter as the Pirates hit on only 3 of 11 shots from the field. That’s the bad news. The good news is that in spite of strugging from the field, Boonville still managed to lead Marshall 9-1 at the 4:07 mark before allowing the Owls to go on a 5-0 run for the rest of the period to cut the lead to three at 9-6.
The second quarter was just as close, with Boonville leading by no more than three on two different occasions at 11-8 with 7:12 left and 18-15 on a three by sophomore Tyler Peterson with 28 seconds remaining. The Owls, meanwhile, grabbed their first lead of the game with 3:00 left on a basket by freshman Logan Harris to go up 14-13.
With both teams putting in nine points in the period, the Pirates began to add some distance in the third quarter while opening the half with a basket by senior Holden Hinkle and a three by Peterson to extend the lead to eight at 23-15. Boonville also led by as much as 12 in the period on a basket by Peterson to make it 34-22 with 1:15 left.

Boonville JV coach Kent Peterson said the JV team capped off a very good week.
“Playing four games in four nights and going 3-1 and winning the Mexico tournament is a great accomplishment,” Peterson said. “We got off to a great start in the first quarter leading 19-2.
Defensively, we were very good most of the night until the fourth quarter, where we turned the ball over a few times and gave up some wide-open three-point shots. This was a game where our big men were rewarded for doing the dirty work night in and night out. I told the kids at halftime we needed to pound the ball inside as we had definite advantages over Marshall with our size and strength. We really committed to this in the second half.
“We missed some easy looks inside but our post players did a good job of establishing position and made some nice moves. Connor Loesing had a strong game and I was really proud of how Alec Viertel was aggressive on both ends of the floor. He made some nice low post moves tonight. Ethan Kempf continued his strong play on both ends of the floor and although Ethan Sander and Clayton Lang did not score as many points tonight, they did a great job of defending and getting the ball to our low post players. Good win. The team continues to improve and we are looking forward to the next two-weeks.”
Connor Loesing led a balance attack for Boonville with 13 points along with five rebounds and one assist.
Alec Viertel finished the game with 10 points, six rebounds and one steal, while Ethan Kempf added seven points and seven rebounds, Tanner Green with six points, six rebounds, one assist and one steal, Dalton Hodge with five points, two assists and one steal, Ethan Sander with four points, four assists, two steals, one rebound and one blocked shot, Clayton Lang with three points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists, Jashon Hockaday with three points, two steals and one rebound, Andrew Kueny with two points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal, Jared Oser with two points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal and John Reese with two assists and one rebound.
