Finishes the season at 8-15 overall
The Boonville Lady Pirates softball team did everything right up until the bottom half of the fourth Wednesday night against Chillicothe in the opening round of the Class 3 District 15 Tournament at Marshall.
Although the Lady Pirates trailed 5-4 after 3 1/2, the game at that point was still up for grabs. But Chillicothe changed all of that by reeling off nine unanswered runs over the next-three innings for a 14-4 victory.
The loss closed out a disappointing season for the Lady Pirates, who finished 8-15 overall.
“We came out ready to play and did a lot of things right early in this game,” said Boonville Lady Pirates softball coach Christie Zoeller. “However, their batters just figured out our timing and hit the ball. We just didn’t play solid defense and that’s what took us out of this game. It is always bittersweet when the season comes to an end. We will miss our seniors and are thankful for all that they have given to this program the last four years.”
The Lady Pirates had the right idea against Chillicothe by pushing across one run in the top half. While finishing the inning with two hits, the lead off single by Kourtney Kendrick able Boonville to score two batters later on a wild pitch.
Of course Chillicothe got the run back in its half of the inning on three singles. However, in the top half of the second, Boonville tacked on another run when Daylynn Baker was issued a one out walk and then advanced to second on the infield single by Logan Root before coming home on the RBI-single to center by Emma West.
The Lady Pirates never led again after that as Chillicothe plated four more runs in the bottom half of the second on a RBI-double to center by Alexie Walker and a two-run home run to right center by Abby Jones to make it 5-2.
Boonville didn’t go down without a fight, though. After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Pirates came back and plated two runs in the fourth on a RBI-single to center by West and a RBI-single to center by Hailey Polk to cut the lead to one at 5-4.
It was pretty much all Chillicothe after that as the Lady Hornets added three more in the fourth on two hits, one walk and one error to extend the lead to 8-4. Then, after holding Boonville scoreless in its half of the fifth, Chillicothe came back and tacked on two more in the fifth on a two-RBI single to right by Halle Rucker and four in the sixth on four hits, one walk and one error to win by the mercy rule.
Mollie Ellis picked up the win in relief for Chillicothe while Peyton Kempf took the loss for Boonville, dropping her to 3-10 on the season. Ellis pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up just two walks while striking out two batters. Kempf, meanwhile, pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out one batter. Emma West then came in and pitched four innings in relief and issued nine runs on eight hits and two walks.
Chillicothe also out-hit Boonville 14-8, with Jordan Hibner going 3-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI. Abby Jones singled, homered and drove in three runs while Libby Adkins and Kiley Kirkpatrick each had two singles and one RBI and Alexie Walker with one double and two RBIs.
For Boonville, West went 2-for-3 with two singles and two RBIs. Polk finished the game with one single and one RBI while Kourtney Kendrick, Jamie Lemmons, Brooke Eichelberger, Daylynn Baker and Logan Root each had one single.
