Boonville Lady Pirates softball coach Christie Zoeller said there were a lot of teachable moments in Wednesday night’s 9-0 loss against the Mexico Lady Bulldogs.
While dropping to 3-6 on the season, the Lady Pirates may have followed up one of their best games of the season with one of their worst after committing a season high eight errors.
“We played four really good innings in this game,” Zoeller said. “Emma did a great job keeping their batters guessing early in the game. Her drop ball was really working and causing them to pop up to our infielders.  When the fifth rolled around our youth and inexperience against really good hitting teams started to show defensively. Mexico is a great team with a really good pitcher and we just kind froze in the fifth and committed way too many silly errors. We also struggled in the box, we did out the bat on the ball pretty well however we weren’t able to find the holes. We can only hone to grow and learn from our mistakes.”
The Lady Pirates were right there with Mexico for four innings, trailing the Bulldogs 2-0. However, in the fifth, Mexico exploded for six runs on five hits, one walk and three errors to extend the lead to 8-0. Then, in the sixth, the Lady Bulldogs plated another run to end the scoring.
Holman picked up the win in the circle for Mexico by giving up just four hits and striking out 10 batters.
For Boonville, Emma West suffered her first loss of the season by giving up eight runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. Peyton Kempf then came in and pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief and allowed one run on three hits.
Mexico also out-hit Boonville 10-4, with Smith going 3-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI. Blevins also singled and doubled while Holman homered.
For Boonville, Bryanna Jones went 2-for-3 with two singles while Josie Robb and Emma West each had one single.
In the JV game, Boonville defeated Mexico 9-6 to improve to 4-1 on the season.
The Lady Pirates never trailed in the game against Mexico and led 1-0 after two and 6-4 after three. Meanwhile, in the fifth, Boonville outscored the Lady Bulldogs 3-2.
Boonville JV coach Caitlin Holman said Brooke Eichelberger pitched a great game.
“Mexico started getting some hits and bringing in runs to cut our lead,” Holman said. “Brooke held on and never gave up in the circle. I was very proud of the perseverance she showed pitching. She also led our hits with a triple and an RBI. We went up to the plate swinging and confident and it paid off. We had several big hits and runners driven in. Our defense also worked well together and backed each other up. Trigg was solid behind the plate catching and quick to catch runners off guard on bases. All around great game.”
While picking up the win in the circle for Boonville, Eichelberger  struck out eight batters and gave up six runs on four hits and six walks in five innings.
Boonville also had 11 hits in the game, with Alexis Trigg going 2-for-3 with two doubles. Brooke Eichelberger was 2-for-2 with a single, triple and one RBI while Reese Lavers added a single and a double, Mia Hatter with one double and two RBIs, Olivia Eichelberger with one double, Becky Evans with one single and two RBIs, Anna Thompson with one single and one RBI, Rachel Massa with one single and Faith Mesik with one RBI.
