Lady Pirates improve to 3-5 on the season

The Boonville Lady Pirates softball team now has what they call a winning streak after beating the Marshall Owls 9-3 Monday night at Rolling Hills park.
After last week’s 16-1 win in three innings against New Franklin and Monday’s win over Marshall, head coach Christie Zoeller said she feels like the girls are starting to do a lot of things right and play well together.
“Our bats were on tonight,” Zoeller said. “We did a great job stringing hit together and we were also aggressive on the bases. We played really good defense behind great pitching tonight also. This was another great win for us.”
The Lady Pirates, who improved to 3-5 on the season, will take anything they can get at this point after out-hitting Marshall 12-8 and committing just one error in the field.
Zoeller also had to be happy with the pitching by freshman Emma West. While picking up her first varsity win against New Franklin, West looked even better against Marshall while giving up only two runs on six hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings. She also struck out four batters to improve to 2-0 on the season. Senior Peyton Kempf also looked sharp in relief by surrendering just one run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Of course it didn’t hurt that West played with the lead most of the game as Boonville put up one run in the first with just one hit on a single past first by senior Jamie Lemmons. Marshall also had one error in the inning and surrendered the early run on a ground out to short by Bryanna Jones.
Meanwhile, after a scoreless second inning, the Lady Pirates had their best inning of the ballgame in the third by exploding for four runs on five hits to extend the lead over Marshall to 5-0. Kourtney Kendrick, Jamie Lemmons, Bryanna Jones, Alexis Albin and Daylynn Baker each had singles in the inning for Boonville.
The runs didn’t stop there for Boonville, though.
After West threw another gem in the top half of the fourth by stranding two runners, the Lady Pirates came back and tacked on three more runs in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI-single to right by Josie Robb and a two-RBI single past third by Jones to make it 8-0.
Marshall finally got on the board with one run in the fifth on a walk, bunt single and fly out to center by Kylie Sims. However in the bottom half of the inning, Boonville answered with one run on a single by Baker and a ground ball for an error by Brooke Eichelberger to push the lead to 9-1.
The Lady Owls added another run in the sixth on two hits and a wild pitch and then tacked on one in the seventh on a solo home run to right by Abbie Marshall.
Jamie Lemmons finished the game 3-for-4 for Boonville with two singles, one double and one RBI. Baker also had three hits with three singles and one RBI while Jones added two singles and four RBIs, Brooke Eichelberger with one double, Robb with a RBI-single and Kendrick and Albin each with one single.
For Marshall, Kailei Allen went 3-for-4 with three singles. Abbie Marshall homered while Hannah Marshall doubled.
Hannah Marshall also took the loss in the circle for the Lady Owls despite striking out nine batters.
