The Boonville 12U All-Stars had their perfect record come to an end Thursday morning in the opening round of bracket play by losing to Patterson All-Stars 12-1 in the Babe Ruth World Series at Jensen Beach, Florida.
Despite finishing 3-0 in pool play with wins over Mount Olive 3-2, Dare County 6-1 and Ellensburg 13-9, the Boonville 12U All-Stars opened bracket play as the No. 4 seed overall.
Boonville Babe Ruth Softball Administrator Kathy Howard said the Boonville 12U All-Stars had one game cancelled Wednesday night in pool play due to rain. “Due to rain, bracket play was based on three pool play games instead of the original four that were scheduled,” Howard said.
The Boonville 12U All-Stars also had a couple of close calls in pool play, starting with their opening game on Monday against Mount Olive.
While winning 3-2, the Boonville 12U All-Stars also had just three hits on singles by Marci Lammers, Amera Wright and Abby Fuemmeler.
Preslee Sunderland picked up the win in the circle for Boonville by giving up just one run on four walks in five innings. She also struck out five batters. Skylar Sunderland then came in and pitched one inning in relief and allowed one run on one walk.
In Game 2 on Tuesday against Dare County, the Boonville 12U All-Stars wasted little time getting out in front by scoring four runs in the bottom half of the first en route to a 6-1 victory.
Preslee Sunderland was the winning pitcher again in the game for Boonville. In 3 2/3 innings, Sunderland gave up just two walks while striking out five batters. Megan Lewis then came in and pitched two innings in relief and issued one run on one hit and three walks while striking out seven batters.
Boonville also out-hit Dare County 3-1, with Marci Lammers going 2-for-2 with a single and a double. Amera Wright was 1-for-3 with one RBI while Megan Lewis, Preslee Sunderland and Cora Thompson each had one RBI and scored one run. Abby Fuemmeler, Makaylea Felten and Skylar Sunderland also scored one run each.
In Game 3 on Wednesday against Ellensburg, which had three rain delays, the Boonville 12U All-Stars rallied from a 8-3 deficit after two by outscoring Ellensburg 10-1 over the next three innings for a 13-9 victory.
Preslee Sunderland picked up the win in relief for Boonville by giving up just one run on one hit and four walks while striking out five batters in 2 1/3 innings. Skylar Sunderland started the game and gave up eight runs on three hits and four walks while striking out four batters in two innings pitched.
Skylar Sunderland also had the only hit in the game for Boonville with a single and two RBIs.
Cora Thompson, Bridgette Lutz, Alison Eichelberger and Le’Asia Bruce each scored two runs while Abby Fuemmeler, Amera Wright and Addison Newell each scored one run. Wright also drove in one run.
In the opening game in bracket play on Thursday, the Boonville 12U All-Stars had a horrible start by giving up seven runs in the top half of the first.
While scoring their only run in the bottom half of the second, the Boonville 12U All-Stars again fell victim on defense by surrendering three more runs on the fifth and two in the sixth.
Boonville finished the game with five errors against Patterson.
Preslee Sunderland took the loss for Boonville by giving up seven runs on two hits and six walks in four innings. She also struck out four batters.
Marci Lammers had the only hit in the game for Boonville, being a single. Amera Wright, meanwhile, scored the only run for the 12U All-Stars.
