Boonville senior tennis players Francesco Bona and Luke Rehagen did something that has never been done before in the history of boys tennis.
While competing in the individual portion of the sectional tournament Tuesday at Helias in Jefferson City, Bona and Rehagen punched their ticket to the state tournament with an impressive two set victory against Helias’ Seth Pezley and Jacob Cowley 6-3, 6-4.
Boonville Pirates tennis coach Stephanie Green, who is the only female to qualify for state in tennis from Boonville, said it was one of their goals to move the guys on through the individual brackets.
“Their performance today was controlled and smart,” Green said. “They played some tough points with grace and were able from the beginning of the match to execute their own game plan.”
Bona and Green, 16-1 on the season, will now advance to the state tournament in doubles at Cooper Tennis Courts in Springfield on Friday, May 25th.
Green said the state tournament will consist of 16 singles players and 16 doubles teams.
Of course Bona and Rehagen weren’t the only Boonville tennis players competing at sectionals. Seniors Kyle Chrisman and Gabe Rumbaoa, who finished second last Friday in the district tournament in Mexico, fell in their match against Dalton Buschjost and Tristan Grawe of Helias in straight sets 7-6 (3) and 6-1.
Green said Chrisman and Rumbaoa were equally impressive against Helias’ No. 1 team.
“They played a lot of heavy balls and points with a lot of pace,” Green said. “When they were down 1-4 in the first set, they decided they would take it to a tiebreak and that’s exactly what they did. Unfortunately a couple of errors put them down 3-6 and they just couldn’t quite bounce back to seal the set. Almost every game in both sets went to deuce games and a lot of them were multiple deuce games. Our guys are dedicated competitors and it certainly showed today. We still have the entire team as state qualifiers with their sectional team tournament coming Saturday.”
