The Prairie Home boys and girls track team competed at a high level for its first track meet of the 2018 season by competing against a strong field in the Westran Open.
With a total of 11 teams competing in the meet, head coach Marie Pope said there were many new, fresh faces so it was a great chance to get some times and distances on the record. “It was a long, cold night, but our athletes were tough competitors,” Pope said. “I’m really looking forward to an exciting season with the largest team Prairie Home has had in the last couple years. We have a great group of kids that support each other and have a lot of fun together.”
In the final team standings for the boys, South Shelby captured first with 253 points. Glasgow finished second with 244, followed by Marceline at 239, Salisbury at 192, Fayette at 104, Sturgeon at 99, Westran at 66, Slater at 59, Prairie Home ninth at 56 and Madison 10th at 16.
For the girls standings, Marceline captured first with 346 points. Glasgow finished second with 234, followed by South Shelby at 175, Salisbury at 152, Fayette at 75, Slater at 74, Sturgeon and Westran tied for seventh place at 70, Madison ninth at 64 and Community 10th at 54.
Sophomore Clayton Pethan had the highest place finish for Prairie Home, placing fourth in the 400-meter dash in a time of 56.28 seconds.
Placing fifth for the Panthers were Blake Petsel in the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.34 and Sage Eichenburch in the 3200-meter run in 12:43. Eichenburch also took sixth in the 1600-meter run in a time of 5:28.
Gabe Turner finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 16’-4”.
Eleventh place finishers for Prairie Home were Creed Flood in both the 100-meter dash in 12.94 seconds and 400-meter dash in 1:01.58, Eichenburch in the 300-meter hurdles in 57.77 seconds and Kourtney Kendrick in the long jump with a leap of 12’-0”, 100-meter dash in 14.89 seconds and 200-meter dash in 31.26 seconds.
Finishing 12th were Austin Small in both the 800-meter run in 2:42 and long jump at 14.05 and Allen Haslag in the 3200-meter run in 14:07.
Kelsey Watson took 13th in the 100-meter dash in 15.15 seconds.
Finishing in 15th place for the Panthers were Billy Kellum in the 100-meter dash in 13.64 seconds, Gabe Turner in the discus with a toss of 81’-7” and Kelsey Watson in the long jump with a jump of 10’-10” and 200-meter dash in 33.13 seconds.
Allen Haslag placed 16th in the 800-meter run in 2:51 and 18th in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:05.34.
Kaelyn Crews finished 26th in the 100-meter dash in a time of 18.30 seconds.
Finishing in 27th place were Billy Kellum in the 200-meter dash in 32.61 seconds and Jordan Johnson in the 100-meter dash in 16.07 seconds. Johnson also placed 28th in the 200-meter dash in 37.01 seconds.
In relays, the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200-meter relay teams both finished fourth for the Panthers in times of 49.62 seconds and 1:47.34, respectively.
Competing on the 4 x 100-meter relay team for Prairie Home was Creed Flood, Gabe Turner, Clayton Pethan and Blake Petsel. On the 4 x 200-meter relay team was Turner, Petsel, Pethan and Kellum.
Finishing fifth in the 4 x 400-meter relay team for the Panthers was the team of Petsel, Pethan, Flood and Small in a time of 4:17.01. Meanwhile, in sixth place in the 4 x 800-meter relay was the team of Haslag, Small, Eichenburch and Johnson in 11:06.67.
