The Boonville Pirates C-baseball team finished finished 1-0-1 in a doubleheader Thursday night at home against the Blair Oaks Falcons.
While finishing in a 4-4 tie in the first game, the Pirates came back and beat Blair Oaks 9-2 in the nightcap to improve to 3-0-1 on the season.
Boonville C-team coach Joe Henke said the Pirates made a few mistakes in the first game that led to three unearned runs. “I am super proud of the boys for rallying in the last two innings to get the tie,” Henke said. “Spencer Steakley drove in two runs and Lane West pitched very well in the second game along with Kayle Rice and Hunter Steakley, who combined for a three hitter. We did a much better job in the field and also hit the ball a lot better. Cody Garner had three hits and every batter was able to get on base in the second game.”
After a 1-1 score in the first, Blair Oaks came back and tacked on three more runs in the top-half of the second to go up 4-1. However, after a scoreless third, Boonville came back and plated two in the fourth and one again in the fifth to tie the game at 4-all.
Axton Nease started the game and pitched 1 2/3 innings for Boonville and gave up four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out three. Lane West then came in and pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief and allowed four hits and one walk while striking out two batters.
Blair Oaks also out-hit Boonville 8-4, with Salmons going 3-for-3 with three singles and one RBI. Haney and Hagner each had two hits.
For Boonville, Spencer Steakley doubled and drove in two runs while Hunter Pethan added a single and one RBI, Saylor Marquez and Kayle Rice each with one single and Lane West with one RBI.
In the nightcap, Blair Oaks again jumped out in front with one run in the first and one again in the second. However it was all Boonville after that with three runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings of play for the victory.
Hunter Pethan picked up the win on the mound for Boonville by giving up just three hits in three innings. Kayle Rice then came in and pitched two innings in relief and allowed two runs on two walks while striking out three batters.
Boonville also out-hit Blair Oaks in the second game 9-3, with Cody Garner going 3-for-3 with one single, two doubles and two RBIs. Hunter Pethan, Harper Stock and Harley Waller each had one single and one RBI while Charlie Bronakowski, Landon Williams and Andrew Wiser added one single each.
Boonville’s C-baseball team will play next on Wednesday, March 28th at Sedalia Smith-Cotton starting at 5 p.m.
