The Boonville C baseball team had a great start to the season by picking up a sweep against the Columbia Hickman Kewies Tuesday night in Columbia 2-1 and 4-3.
While collecting a total of 10 hits in 10 innings, head coach Joe Henke said the boys came out and put together two solid defensive games. “I loved the way we pitched and defended,” Henke said. “Great first games of the year.”
The Pirates never trailed in either game against Hickman, leading 1-0 after the third and 2-0 after 3 1/2. The Kewpies lone run in Game 1 came in the bottom-half of the fourth.
As for the pitching, Cody Garner picked up the win with seven strikeouts in four innings. He also gave up just one run on two hits. Lane West then came in and pitched one inning in relief and allowed one hit while striking out one batter.
Garner, West and Hunter Pethan also had one single each in Game 1 for the Pirates. Bryce Harris and Saylor Marquez drove in one run each.
In the nightcap, Boonville again jumped out on top with three runs in the first and one again in the second to go up 4-0. Hickman, meanwhile, plated one in the bottom-half of the second and two in the fifth.
Spencer Steakley picked up the win on the mound for boonville by giving up just two runs on four hits and two innings. Charlie Bronakowski, meanwhile, pitched three innings in relief and allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out two.
Boonville also finished the game with seven hits, with Saylor Marquez going 2-for-3 with two singles, one double and three RBIs. Bryce Harris and Lane West also doubled in the game while Harper Stock added one single and one RBI and Cody Garner and Charlie Bronakowski one single each.
