Although it was one day later, the New Franklin boys basketball team looked the part as a No. 2 seed Wednesday night in the Class 2 District 14 Tournament at Windsor by beating Smithto0n 61-40.
The Bulldogs, improving to 19-7 on the season, is scheduled to play Windsor in the semifinal round on Thursday. The Greyhounds knocked off No. 3 Lincoln on Wednesday 72-67. In the only other game on Wednesday, No. 1 Sacred Heart cruised past Stover 74-43.
Sacred Heart will play Sweet Springs in the first semifinal.
Commenting on the win over Smithton, New Franklin coach Ross Dobson said the boys started off a little sluggish, but finally woke up in the second half.
“We put together another good defensive effort and if we want to continue to play, we must play good defense without fouling.”
The Bulldogs definitely had their hands full early on while leading Smithton by just one at 11-10. However, in the second period, New Franklin held Smithton to only eight points while putting up 13 to extend the lead at the break to 24-18. The Bulldogs never looked back from that point on while outscoring Smithton 37-22 in the second half.
Bailey Lyons had the game-high for New Franklin with 21 while Mason Bailey chipped in 18, Carter Bailey nine, Tyler Perkins eight and Gavin Bishop with five.
The Bulldogs also hit on 72 percent of their shots from the foul line while making 13 of 18 attempts.
For Smithton, Will Tripp and Riley Green each had nine points.
