Improve to 7-5 overall and 6-1 in NCMC
The Boonville girls junior varsity basketball team improved to 7-5 overall and 6-1 in the NCMC by beating Mexico 41-36 Friday night during Courtwarming at the Windsor gymnasium.
The Lady Pirates had a great start in the first quarter by outscoring Mexico 13-10. However, in the second quarter, Mexico rallied back with a 12-8 advantage to lead Boonville by one at 22-21. The Lady Pirates never trailed after that by outscoring Mexico 7-4 in the third to lead by two at 28-26. Meanwhile, in the final period, Boonville held a 13-10 advantage to win the game by five.
Boonville JV coach Alex Wendell said knowing from the last time the two teams met, the girls could not come out slow and give themselves the potential to be stuck in a hole.
“The girls came out really strong, especially on defense,” Wendell said. “This is the most physical I’ve seen the girls play. We usually play pretty passive, but they got after it. Sophi Waibel and Brooke Eichelberger had great games. Sophi had an excellent offensive game and Brooke played great defense and snagged a lot of rebounds. I like to see the girls playing this way because this is what I’ve known they could do all season. We are definitely capitalizing on our improvements right now.”
Sophi Waibel paced all scorers in the game for Boonville with 25 points.
Brooke Eichelberger finished the game with seven while Sarah Miller added four, Taylor Frederick three and Olivia Gholson with two.
For Mexico, Abby Oetting tossed in nine points while Chloe Sims had eight, Catie Bledsoe six, Rachel Kristofferson and Hayley Mills each with four, Lily Knipfel three and Angel Nichols with two.
The Boonville girls varsity and junior varsity basketball teams will play next on Saturday, Feb. 3rd against Class 2 state-ranked Skyline at Skyline High School starting at 2 p.m. Then, on Tuesday, Feb. 6th, the Lady Pirates will play a varsity doubleheader at Hannibal starting at 6.
The Boonville girls basketball team will also go on the road against the Marshall Owls on Thursday, Feb. 8th starting at 6 p.m.
