If you take away the second quarter Tuesday night against top-seeded Smithton in the Otterville Holliday Classic and the Bunceton Lady Dragons basketball team may have been on the opposite end of the score instead of losing by 15 at 65-50.
Unfortunately for Bunceton, they had one bad quarter as Smithton outscored the Lady Dragons 20-4 in the second period. Smithton also led 14-13 after first period’s end while Bunceton held a 33-31 advantage in the second half.
“We played with Smithton for the majority of the game, but the second quarter we only scored four points,” said Bunceton coach Brian Emde. “We shot 35 percent but couldn’t get our shots to fall in the second quarter. We need to take better case of the ball since we had 29 turnovers. We will play for third place on Friday against La Monte.”
Madison Brown had 24 points and Audrey Williams 15 for Smithton.
For Bunceton, who dropped to 3-8 on the season, Taylor Burnett finished the game with 14 points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist.
Chloe Moser chipped in 13 points, five rebounds and one steal while Emily Clevenger added 13 points, two assists, one rebound and one steal, Lauren Wieland nine points, eight rebounds, six steals and five assists, Cara Bishop one point, five rebounds and two steals, Jenna Kahle two rebounds and two assists, Skyler Shuffield three assists and Madelynn Myers with one rebound.
In the opening round of the tournament against Northwest of Hughesville back on Friday, Dec. 29th, the Lady Dragons won by a score of 74-42.
Bunceton outscored Northwest of Hughesville in all four quarters and led 40-23 at the half and 58-37 after three quarters of play.
Lauren Wieland led four players in double figures for Bunceton with 19 points along with 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals.
Taylor Burnett finished the game with 16 points, two assists and one rebound while Chloe Moser added 14 points, six rebounds and one steal, Skyler Shuffield 13 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and two steals, Madelyn Myers eight points, two steals and two assists, Cara Bishop two points, five rebounds, two steals and two assists, Taylyn Heilman also with two points, Jenna Kahle seven rebounds, two steals and one assist, Maddie Brandes two rebounds and Kylie Heilman with one rebound and one assist.
For Northwest, Megan Walk tossed in 15 points.
