The LSE Lady Pirates eighth grade basketball team picked up its first win of the season Thursday night on the road by beating the Moberly Spartans 26-21.
The Lady Pirates, 1-2 on the season, led Moberly throughout the game and took a 14-7 lead at the half. LSE also led 16-15 after three quarters of play despite being outscored 8-2. Meanwhile, in the final period, LSE outscored Moberly 10-6 to win the game by five.
LSE coach Kaitlyn Nelson said the girls came out and started strong. “We kept the momentum going all through the game,” Nelson said. “The girls focused on blocking out when on defense, running their offense, and playing smart defense. Each girl improved and played together as a team.”
Grace Dennis had the game-high for LSE with 12 points along with six rebounds and one steal.
Kyleigh Thacker finished the game with six points, nine rebounds, one steal and one assist while Nora Morris added six points and two rebounds, Faith Mesik with two points, three steals and two rebounds, Madison Henderson with two rebounds and two steals, Katera Bonaparte with two rebounds and one steal and Anna Thompson with one rebound and one steal.
Wilkey had the team-high for Moberly with nine points.

The Moberly girls seventh grade basketball team outscored LSE 12-0 in the first quarter and never looked back Thursday night in Moberly.
The Lady Pirates, dropping to 0-3 on the season, trailed Moberly 18-4 at the half and 22-6 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, LSE matched the Lady Spartans with four points.
LSE seventh grade coach Susie Stone said the girls rebounded better than they had the previous two games in the first half.
“We improved in our half-court defense and at times we moved the ball better on offense,” Stone said. “We just need to work on continuing to square up to the basket on offense and make stronger passes, block out for four quarters, and court awareness. The girls are making progress and were more aggressive tonight.”
Kennedy Messer had the game-high for Moberly with 12 points.
For LSE, Carlie Bishop finished the game with eight points, four steals and three rebounds.
Natalie Page tallied two points, four rebounds and one steal while Heather Hall added seven rebounds and two steals, Molly Schuster five rebounds, two steals and one assist, Addy Ward five rebounds and one steal, Kinley Fox two rebounds, one steal and one assist, Anastasia Butler one rebound and one steal and Hailee Williams with one steal.
