Sturgeon boys rally past Pilot Grove for 34-31 victory

The New Franklin girls basketball team had its best offensive performance of the season while leading the Slater Wildcats from start to finish for a 41-20 victory Wednesday night in the CAC Tournament at Madison.
While putting up a season-high 41 points, the Lady Bulldogs also led Slater 27-13 at the half and 36-15 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, New Franklin matched Slater with five points.
New Franklin coach Chris McGowan said the Lady Bulldogs really shot the ball well in this game. “It was nice to see so many of our girls be able to score,” McGowan said.
Abby Maupin had the team-high for New Franklin, who improved to 4-3 on the season, with 13 points. Addy Salmon and Hermione Pierce each chipped in seven points while Autumn Nichols added six, Justice Singleton three, Faith Painter and Abagail Griffin each with two and Ruby Simpson with one.
Slater was led by Kenzie Nelson with 15 points.

Sturgeon held off a fourth-quarter rally by Pilot Grove to win 34-31 Wednesday night in the CAC Tournament at Madison.
The Tigers, dropping to 3-4 on the season, led Sturgeon 12-7 after first period’s end but was outscored 11-4 in the second to trail by two (18-16) at the half. Sturgeon also held a 11-8 advantage in the third quarter to extend the lead to five at 29-24. Meanwhile, in the final period, the Tigers rallied back with a 7-5 scoring edge to make it a three-point game.
Pilot Grove coach Derek Skaggs said this was a frustrating game for the kids and himself. “We played nowhere near our potential and that is always the worst feeling,” Skaggs said. “We have to bounce back and play for third in the conference tournament on Friday.”
Blake Darwent had 10 points and Dawson Brooks nine for Sturgeon.
For Pilot Grove, Isaiah Quick tossed in 11 points. Hayden Krumm and Bo Vinson added nine while Luke Kollmeyer had two points
