The Pilot Grove boys and girls junior high basketball teams opened the CAC Tournament in convincing fashion Monday night in Madison.
While the Lady Tigers defeated Slater 46-17, the Pilot Grove boys also prevailed against the host team by a score of 42-20.
The Lady Tigers, 5-2 on the season, led Slater from the opening tip by taking a 27-3 lead at the half. Pilot Grove also held a 19-14 advantage in the final-two periods to win the game by 29.
Pilot Grove coach Linda Scott said the girls ran the floor well and everybody scored. “I thought we had super passing in the game,” Scott said. “We hit some threes and really forced defensive pressure all game.”
Grace Phillips had the game-high for Pilot Grove with 15 points. Leah Vollrath chipped in seven while Danae Lammers and Natalie Glenn added six, Kaitlyn Maggard five, Clarie Roth four and Marci Lammers two.
As for the Pilot Grove boys, they led Slater 10-2 after first period’s end and then outscored the Wildcats 16-6 in the second to extend the lead to 26-8. The second half was more of the same as the Tigers outscored Slater 16-12 for the win.
Pilot Grove coach Derek Skaggs said the guys came out and got a great start by outscoring Slater 26-8 in the first half. “We shot the ball with a terrible percentage at the free-throw line, but our defense did a great job of carrying us through and giving us easy baskets in transition,” Skaggs said.
Dalton Reuter was the leading scorer in the game for Pilot Grove, who improved to 3-3, with 14 points. Hayden Krumm chipped in 11 while Dylan Schupp added seven, Hank Zeller six and Bo Vinson with four.
