The Bunceton Lady Dragons volleyball team had its season come to a screeching halt Monday night in the opening round of the Class 1 District 11 Tournament in Smithton.
As the No. 6 seed in the tournament, the Lady Dragons fell in two straight sets against third-seeded Smithton by the scores of 11-25 and 14-25.
Bunceton coach Casandra Goyer said the girls played hard and were point for point with Smithton in the first set. “We got down on ourselves and made some silly mistakes and then just could not come back from them,” Goyer said. “The girls had a pretty good season and I am proud to have been their coach.”
Senior Lauren Wieland led the Lady Dragons with three blocks along with three digs, two kills and one ace.
Reagan Triebsch finished the match with three aces and one kill while Skyler Shuffield added one kill, one ace and one dig, Jenna Kahle with two digs, Kylie Heilman with one kill and one ace, Autumn Bishop with one kill and one block and Cara Bishop with one dig.
In other matches on Monday, No. 2 Lincoln defeated No. 7 Calhoun in straight sets 25-16 and 25-8 while No. 4 Stover toppled No. 5 Otterville by the scores of 25-16 and 25-12.
The semifinal round was played on Tuesday, with No. 1 Green Ridge battling Stover and No. 2 Lincoln squaring off against No. 3 Smithton.
The winners of the two semifinal matches will play for the title later that night.
