New Franklin girls beat Bunceton, 32-21

The New Franklin boys junior high basketball team picked up a big win Wednesday night in the Prairie Home Junior High Basketball Tournament.
After beating Prairie Home in the opening round on Monday, the Bulldogs came back and knocked off previously unbeaten Pilot Grove on Wednesday by a score of 50-17.
In other games in the tournament, the New Franklin girls defeated Bunceton 32-21 while the Russellville boys upended New Franklin’s B-team 43-24. The Russellville girls also won against Prairie Home 32-20.
Tre Cowans had 15 points to lead all scorers for New Franklin’s A-team. Brett Boggs and Landon Belstle each had 10 points while Clayton Wilmsmeyer chipped in five and Tyler Jennings and Blake Evans each with two.
“The boys got off to a very slow start,” said New Franklin boys coach Jim Schlotzhauer. “We were sluggish and a little bit lazy in our communication and effort. I was glad to see us battle back with a very nice end of the first and second quarters.”
For Pilot Grove,  Isaiah Quick had nine, Bo Vinson four and Hank Zeller with two.
In other games, the New Franklin girls led Bunceton from start to finish while leading 12-7 at the half and 22-13 after three quarters of play. The Lady Bulldogs also outscored Bunceton 10-8 in the final period.
New Franklin coach Chris McGowan said the girls played better in this game than they did the first game.
Abygale Maupin had the game-high for New Franklin with 11 points. Carly Dorson chipped in eight, Addy Salmon six, Autumn Nichols three and Dakota Clark and Justice Singleton each with two.
For Bunceton, who dropped to 0-6, Laney Heilman had eight points, eight rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Alexia Hein finished the game with five points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist while Kylee Myers added four points, seven rebounds, two steals and one assist, Abby Cunningham two points, six rebounds, one steal and one assist and Madison Davis with two points and two rebounds.
As for the Prairie Home girls, they also trailed at the end of each quarter against Russellville as the Lady Indians led 18-8 at the half and 25-11 after three quarters of play.
Mehmert had the high game for Russellville with 10 points.
For Prairie Home, who dropped to 5-4, Madison Brown had 12 points, five steals and three rebounds. Allison Simmons chipped in six points and eight rebounds while Paiton Williams added two points, 10 rebounds and one steal, Kamden Holliday with one steal and Aubree Hedgepath with one rebound.
In the New-Franklin B-team game, Zach Miller had 15 points for Russellville. For New Franklin, Zac Vollrath tossed in 14, David Palmer eight and Nick Postak with two.
